Don’t get shoddy, get shod with sassy, shocking and sophisticated shoes!
WHO says plastic shoes are cheap stuff? If the Kaiser of fashion deems it fit to dabble in this quirky genre, then it’s certainly going to be anything but cheap!
Karl Lagerfeld recently teamed up with Brazilian brand Melissa to lend his genius to the Winter 2013 collection.
For Cine Melissa, expect Premiere, Action, Comedy, Suspense, Drama and Romance, all the elements that make for a suspenseful showing.
Protagonists of the season come in powerful heels, fashionable boots and flats with many irresistible features. These are made even more striking in intense tones that gently shift to citrus notes, given that inspiration ranges from militarism to minimalism, comprising a revisit of the best of each of the golden decades of cinema.
Some of the standout pieces include a flat-soled Salomé style sandal studded with pointy metal. Inspired by the underground, spikes have continued to invade international fashion catwalks and are winter hits. A pair of ankle boots feature a sinuous cutout that plays with asymmetry. The minimalist inspired design plays with sensuality, alternately revealing and covering the sides of the feet.
What’s different is the Melissa Riding (pic), a unique two-in-one knee length boot which you can convert into ankle-high boots.
The partnerships continue in full swing with other celebrated names such as Pedro Lourenço, Liberty Art Fabrics, Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh, Campana Brothers, Jason Wu, Salinas, J.Maskrey.
American artist Robert McGinnis, responsible for some of the most iconic posters of the history of cinema, like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Barbarella, 007 Live and Let Die specially redesigned exclusive posters promoting the collection featuring Ultragirl High, Spikes and Doris shoes.
Through the lens
The keyword this fall is collaboration. It’s always good to team up with someone creative from outside the industry who can lend a different vision to what you’re used to seeing.
American modern accessories brand Coach recently announced an exclusive collaboration with Chen Man, one of China’s most influential fashion photographers, to shoot its Fall 2013 footwear collection. Chen Man captures a series of lifestyle images that are inspired by the elegant and effortlessly stylish Coach woman.
Following the theme, Follow her steps, the images depict a day in Chen Man’s life as told from the perspective of her footwear. The work conveys the energy and creativity reflective of the quintessential New York brand.
“I’m very excited to work with Coach on this collaboration,” said Chen Man
. “Their new footwear collection is luxurious and chic, embracing both classic silhouettes and fashionable styles. The age-old adage of ‘walking in someone else’s shoes’ served as an inspiration for the shoot. I envisioned the modern Coach woman and who she is, and then interpreted her story through a day in the life of her shoes.”
The Coach Fall 2013 footwear collection combines exceptional leathers and impeccable craftsmanship with key trends of the season. There are trademark features such as custom hardware detailing and mixed materials, while materials such as printed fabrics, python embossing and bicolour patent enrich this season’s fashion forward designs. The shoes range from sleek flats to refined pumps.
Study on androgyny
The Charles & Keith Winter 2013 collection spells rebellion and going against the grain, which results in a trend-setting blend of studious androgyny and sleek modernity. The collection features moccasins, lace-up oxford and chunky heels with minimal detailing, complete with punk elements.
Simple structured handbags and totes bags come in neutral shades of black, chalk and taupe while military-inspired fashion is still trending as seen in the footwear. Ornaments such as studs, chains and buckles evokes a sense of order, brought to completion with knee-length leather boots featuring side buckles.
High shine footwear are dressed in gold and silver (pic) as well as an array of bright colours. Structured handbags and boxy bags are so on-trend this season, while classics such as moccasins, heel loafers and ankle boots with artisanal elements share the spotlight. Lace up khaki ankle boots embossed with python skin and other embellished pieces add to bring the heat up a notch this winter.
Sneaking up on the holidays
Yes, yes, it’s not all partying as some of us still have to work, but at least go casual and ante up the party spirit with spritely colours!
Keds Fall/Holiday 2013 brings a variety of sneakers with inspirations taken from the simple pleasures of a slower lifestyle, space explorations and even the British Royalty. Colours and prints this season are bright, bold and sparkly, while the three key trends are Cosmic Pop, New Roots (pic) and Royal Crush.
Given the renewed interest in space exploration and the recent influx of sci-fi movies and novels, designers have gone space-age on us by getting creative with graphics and digital printing. Cosmic Pop story gives plenty of candy brights and pop-art styling. Expect optic prints, metallic stars, galaxy prints, kaleidoscopic florals and ditsy camouflage prints on a sparkle canvas.
In the Royal Crush story, it’s a cheeky approach of British Royalty meets Marie Antoinette, whereby you get rich velvet and satin, as well as a dash of lace for that girly appeal. Photo jewel prints are fun luxe while damask prints adds a Baroque flavour. Metallic leopard and glitter inject a sparkly touch, along with a palette of brilliant jewel tones to exude the festive spirit of the season.
Go slow and get back to the simple pleasures of life with New Roots. Strong menswear influences are largely evident on with a feminised styling. Updated classic prints are key details seen traditional plaids that are given a kaleidoscopic twist. Saturated hues amp up this season’s tie and houndstooth prints while feminine florals on darker backgrounds, give balance to the masculine elements.
